1. Think that warning boards are there for your safety. When you see a dog on a pier, riverbank or a lake bank...be careful! Think that also small children cannot read; you are responsible.
2. When you visit a holiday-resort, caravan site, camping, yacht-haven or a friend's farm, inform if you can safely paddle, swim, fish or sail in the area.
3. Think that you will rarely see crocodiles; they are silent, inconspicuous and efficient hunters that will attack quickly. Stay away from the waterline at least 10 ft. (3 meters.) when you intend to fish, and even further away at night. The risk of being attacked will be much smaller. When a fish line gets tangled in the thatch, water-lilies, or in whatever, don't let anyone untie it. A human life is more precious than a string of nylon or a fishhook.
4. Do not let children paddle or play in the water when trifling doubt is there about the presence of crocodiles or alligators in the particular area.
5. Noise does not scare off crocodiles, on the contrary. It makes them realize that there is a prey - human or animal - in their territory, and they are not very pick some.
6. Never consider a shallow slough, weed covered water-basin, drainage canal, or even a ditch as safe, not even when the water itself is a few miles away from the nearest river or lake. Crocodiles tend to move a lot over land at night from one waters to others, and a large crocodile is able to stay under 1 ft. (30 cm.) water longer than half an hour.
7. When your dog suffers from the warmth on a hot summer day, do not let it go into the water, but let it drink at the nearest water tap.
8. Do not leave fish carcasses which cannot be eaten near swimming, paddling, fishing people. Clear it away.
9. Do not clean fish in your boat or on a pier pointing into the water. Intestines or unused bait will attract crocodiles immediately, will eat it and also might attack you.
10. Be aware that nobody in your boat trails a leg or an arm in the water. Also be aware that people really are sitting in the boat and not with their behinds outboard.
11. When a young crocodile swims along your boat or is taking a sun bath on the bank, go back and do not try to catch the animal; its parents might be in the neighborhood (besides, it is illegal to catch or kill crocodiles without a license, or even to pick up crocodile eggs).
12. Shooting in the water with a gun to chase away crocodiles does not guarantee your safety before you intend to cross a river. The produced sound will not be transmitted under the water.
13. At night crocodile eyes light up red in a beam of light. When you search the water that way and do not see the eyes, it does not mean that there are no crocodiles around. One could hide under the pier or under your boat.
14. Do not walk around at night without a torch or flashlight when you are fishing close to the water or when you are camping out.
15. Research has shown that once a crocodile has successfully attacked and killed someone at a location often frequented by people, it will keep coming back to attack again. Placing a simple shield or a barrier of blocks or branches is the only way to prevent a tragedy.
